Updating the Beach Cottage at 312 Pelican Flight

Having spent a year renting the house at lot 67 almost a decade ago, I also spent a lot of time imagining how to improve it. Much of the furniture was the same as it had been since the home was built, and the owners were long-distance when we rented it. The home’s three bedrooms and open living area provided a great way to live as a family on the island– and for a lot of the summer, we had 16 people at many meals. I was thrilled at the way the cottage accommodated all of us.

Within walking distance of Ancient Dunes beach access path, this home at 312 Pelican Flight had a large back porch that overlooked freshwater ponds and the impoundment. There was also a lovely front deck, but if the mosquitoes were out, we found ourselves only using the back deck. The current owners are in a partnership for the house, and they have made some great changes to the house to update it. They began by screening the front porch, so the whole house can be open to the breezes.

Before: an open porch

after (a slightly different angle) a screened entryway with coastal touches for storing jackets and hats at the ready.

I love this fish rack!

Inside, the gathering area was centered around a lovely quilt handmade (and kept) by the former owner:

The new owners kept the table, but replaced all of the other furniture, going with a more natural palette and four chairs instead of sofas:

Now the tv is more centrally located, and natural carpets anchor the room

All those natural textures complement the wood grain of the walls.

While the back porch was a great dining spot before:

It came alive with some new furniture:

Table lamps, outdoor lounging furniture, and accents still allow the focus to be on the amazing views on all sides:

Upstairs, the master bedroom was functional but bland.
An interim owner added a coat of blue paint that included the ceilings, and a larger bed and some colorful linens made a cheery difference:

after the upgrade– wicker headboard and bigger bed make it a more luxurious space. The old wall-to wall carpet was replaced by laminate flooring and an area rug.

The second bedroom had a queen bed as well:

This room got a re-make with twin beds:

And the third bedroom, which once held bunk beds and a trundle, now has a king bed.

The bathroom between those two rooms also got a redo:
same location with new countertops, new tile flooring, and a bright coat of paint

bunk beds separated and brought upstairs, new flooring and carpet

new counters and fixtures added by the interim owner provided a great base for the great-room update.

I think it would be great just to relax on this porch and watch the egrets come home to roost!
