Dewees Island is an Audubon Certified Bird Friendly community and a part of the Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network. All of the maritime forest, marshes, and beaches are in a conservation easement, and homeowners commit to minimal impact on their environment. This includes only gardening with native plants, only disturbing a small footprint to build a home, only sand roads to avoid run-off, and significant home setbacks from the dune ecosystems. The island is private, with 19 of the 65 homes occupied by year-round residents. Located just north of the Isle of Palms near Charleston, it is at the end of the longest stretch of undeveloped coast on the Eastern Seaboard. To our north, the protected beaches of Capers and the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge create a wide swath of wilderness that is home to over 250 species of birds, endangered sea turtles, alligators, deer, and otters.
